Abstract
An equation has been developed that correlates the equilibrium solubility of gibbsite (Al2O3·3H2O) in both Bayer and pure sodium aluminate liquors. It can be used to predict equilibrium liquor composition as a function of temperature, caustic content, and liquor impurity concentrations. The correlation is based on the theory of uni-univalent ion populations in caustic liquors proposed by Dewey. The correlation also yields identical values for ∆H°f and ∆G°f of the AlO2− ion to those determined by Hemingway, Robie, and Kittrick, and provides new estimates for the standard entropy and heat capacity of the AlO2−ion.
