Abstract
The occurrence of tetrahydroisoquinolines (TIQ’s) and β-carbolines (BC’s) in mammals under physiological conditions is discussed con-troversially. A reason for some scepticism might be that the determination of TIQ’s and BC’s requires more sensitive methods than the measurement of known neurotransmitters like noradrenaline (NA), dopamine (DA), and 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT) which serve as precursors. The concentrations of the transmitters in the central nervous system (CNS) of mammals exceed those of most TIQ’s and BC’s by the factor 1000 at least. Furthermore, artefactual admixtures due to contaminations of organic solvents either with the trace amines themselves or with their precursors have to be prevented during the work up procedure. Finally some foodstuff contains TIQ’s and BC’s which gives rise to question endogenous formation by mammals.
