Abstract
Hermann Weyl (1885 – 1955) was formed during his time as a student in Göttingen (1903 to 1908, interrupted by two semesters in Munich) by Klein, Hilbert and the Göttingen tradition, before he himself later grew into the role of one of the most important representatives of this tradition. He tried to combine Klein’s intuitive approach to mathematics with the conceptual and technical achievements of Hilbert (in particular with respect to analysis). In different contexts he took up some of Riemann’s essential ideas and invigorated them in the context of 20th century mathematics. Perceived in a wider scope, Weyl brought his wide philosophical and literary interests to bear upon the style and orientation of his mathematical research and the expression of its results. These influences from diverging sources gave his work a particular personal profile and makes it interesting from a number of different aspects [Chevalley/Weil 1957].
I want to thank S. Sigurdsson, U. Wernick, and D. Witte for their contributions to a better understanding of H. Weyl and his Raum — Zeit — Materie, as well as the Mittag-Leffler Institut where large parts of this paper have been prepared under splendid working conditions during the program on History of Mathematics in early 1991.
