Abstract
The AIDS (acquired immunodeficiency syndrome) epidemic, which appeared suddenly in the early 1980s, has largely stabilized in countries where antiretroviral drugs are widely available. However, in underdeveloped countries, especially those in Africa and Asia, the epidemic rages on at a frightening rate. The causative Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) was first identified in 1983, a time when published reports (1,2) were beginning to describe AIDS-related cachexia and the fundamental role of malnutrition in the pathogenesis of AIDS. Unexplained weight loss remains an important criterion in the diagnosis of AIDS (3).
