Abstract
From the mechanical point of view arterial tissue is nonlinear, anisotropic, inelastic. However for deformations not exceeding too much those occurring in vivo, the inelastic component of the vessel material is moderate. In arteries relaxation, creep and hysteresis are far smaller than in other biological tissues; thus, as a first rough approximation, these time dependent aspects can be neglected. Large arteries may then be regarded as perfectly elastic with a nonlinear stress-strain relationship.
