Abstract
The essential feature of trichotillomania (TM) is the pulling out of one’s hair over a prolonged period, resulting in noticeable hair thinning or bald spots. The majority of hair pullers describe the act as an automatic behavior that occurs during sedentary, contemplative activities such as reading, writing, watching television, speaking on the phone, driving, or lying in bed (Christenson, Mackenzie, & Mitchell, 1991).
