A Reassessment of the Relationship between Later Miocene and Subsequent Hominoidea

  • Chapter
New Interpretations of Ape and Human Ancestry

Part of the book series: Advances in Primatology ((AIPR))

Abstract

In consideration of the significance of middle and later Miocene Hominoidea to the origin of the taxonomic family of humans, Hominidae, there are three central problems. These are: (1) definition of the taxa concerned, (2) demonstration of significant anatomical (and thus phyletic) relationship of any of these later Miocene taxa to later hominids, and (3) establishment of a derivation that is zoogeographically sound in relation to a plausible theory of human descent.
