Abstract
The performance and properties of dolphin sonar systems have been the subject of several investigations during the past 15 years. Facing the manifold questions that have arisen since echolocation was proved in a scientific way, we note substantial progress in the knowledge about the intrinsic properties of the echolocation signals involved in the sonar system and their perception. A closer look at the research carried out following the memorable Jersey meeting in 1979 leaves us, however, with a considerable number of questions as to the why and how of dolphin sonar.
