Characteristics of the Agglutinin in the Scorpion, Androctonus australis

Abstract

The hemolymph of most invertebrates contains naturally occurring hemagglutinins with specificities comparable to the isohemagglutinins present in vertebrate sera (Tyler, 1946; Cushing et al., 1963; Tripp, 1966; Marchalonis and Edelman, 1968; McKay et al., 1969). Similarly, the hemolymph of some invertebrates, such as the oyster (Tripp, 1966), the horseshoe crab (Marchalonis and Edelman, 1968), and the crayfish (McKay and Jenkin, 1969) contains elements analogous to vertebrate antibodies, for both increase the rate of phagocytosis of erythrocytes. Several investigators have tried to characterize the factors involved in invertebrate phagocytosis. Acton et al. (1969), for example, observed that an oyster agglutinin has a sedimentation coefficient of 33 S and that it can be dissociated into polypeptide chains having a molecular weight of 20,000.
