Handbook of Genetics

Abstract

The study of the Genetics of Tetrahymena pyriformis began about 20 years ago with the pioneering studies of Nanney and his co-workers. It is now developing more rapidly and extensively than ever before. Allen and Gibson (1973) have recently summarized the Genetics of T. pyriformisin “an attempt to reinterpret” it in relation to their own current views. Allen (1967c), Nanney (1968b), and Preer (1969) have presented differently oriented reviews. Hill (1972) has summarized the physiology and biochemistry of Tetrahymena, including a chapter on genetics. The general implications of some aspects of Tetrahymena genetics have been discussed by Nanney (1964, 1968b, 1972). Many aspects of the biology of Tetrahymena are dealt with in a book edited by Elliott (1973b) which contains a remarkably extensive bibliography (65 pages in length!); the bibliography has been supplemented by Corliss (1973). Many of the methods used in work on Tetrahymena are the same as or similar to those used on Paramecium which have been summarized by Sonneborn (1950, 1970).

This is contribution No. 952 from the Zoology Department, Indiana University.
