Hearing and Sound Communication in Fishes

Part of the book series: Proceedings in Life Sciences ((LIFE SCIENCES))

Abstract

The saccule and lagena are thought to be the major acoustic receptor organs in most fishes (however, see Blaxter, Denton, and Gray, Chapter 2). Recent ultrastructural studies of these organs in a wide variety of teleosts (Platt and Popper, Chapter 1; Popper 1977) have shown significant intraspecific variability in a number of features such as size, shape, and curvature of the macula; size, sculpturing and positioning of the otolith and its otolithic membrane over the macula; and types of sound pathways to the otolith organs. The functional correlates and adaptive significance of much of this structural variation are not yet clear.
