Abstract
Plantains and starchy bananas are important food staples for more than 50 million people in many tropical countries. They are one of the least expensive source of caloric food to produce and are commonly available throughout the year. The compatibility of plantains for intercrop cultivation is a decided advantage for their extensive use in subsistence farming.
