Abstract
Over the past decade, HIV-1 infection has spread throughout the world, infecting millions of individuals. The problem is most severe in Africa, where the World Health Organization’s Global Programme on AIDS estimated that approximately 2 5 million individuals were infected in 1988 (1). The primary route of transmission of HIV- 1 is heterosexual intercourse (2).
