Abstract
The ventral cochlear nucleus of the cat comprises a number of morphologically distinct subdivisions, each of which appears to have a characteristic pattern of synaptic organization (Lorente de Nó,’ 33,’ 81; Osen,’ 69; Kane,’ 73; Brawer et al.,’ 74; Cant and Morest,’ 79b; Mugnaini et al.,’ 80; Cant,’ 81; Tolbert and Morest,’ 82b; Adams and Mugnaini,’ 87; Smith and Rhode,’ 87,’ 89; Saint Marie et al.,’ 89). One important gap in our knowledge of the synaptic organization of the ventral cochlear nucleus is that one of its subdivisions, the peripheral cap of small cells, has not been described at the level of the electron microscope.
