Abstract
This chapter discusses the general principles and procedures of measurement in understanding the mental health consequences of torture and related violence and trauma experiences for adults. (Measurement issues related to children are discussed in chapter 14 in this volume.) Measurement issues related to the mental health consequences of torture have only recently received attention, although there is a vast amount of literature on related areas (Carlson, 1997; Goldberger & Breznitz, 1993; Wilson & Keane, 1997). In the interest of brevity, however, this chapter will limit its discussion to three important areas: principles of measurement, procedures, and measurement instruments.
