Abstract
Estuarine sand and mudflats hold dense populations of invertebrate animals which are preyed upon by fish while the tide is high and by birds during the low water period. Their principal predators are shore birds which face the problems that the invertebrates may be hidden under a layer of mud or be buried out of reach of their bills at some depth in the soft sediment.
