Abstract
Stresses accompanying medical illness and threatening medical procedures may be even more challenging for children than for adults because these stresses occur in addition to rapidly changing developmental demands. During the past 20 years, the field of pediatric psychology has grown to meet the challenges for children that are found in medical settings. Although many questions remain, currently a large number of psychological interventions have received empirical demonstration of their effectiveness with ill or injured children.
