Abstract

Conditions previously considered sexual deviations were separated in the latest revision of the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III-R) (1987). Paraphilias remained with Sexual Dysfunctions as Sexual Disorders. Gender Identity Disorders were classified as Disorders Usually First Evident in Infancy, Childhood, or Adolescence. A residual class of Other Sexual Disorders included nonparaphilic sexual addiction and persistent and marked distress about one’s sexual orientation.
