Abstract
Pain is perhaps the most common physical symptom and the primary reason for seeking medical attention. Pain of relatively brief duration (acute pain) can be successfully controlled by analgesic medication and other short-term strategies, such as bed rest and heat. For a substantial number of individuals, however, pain will persist beyond the expected period of healing, recur intermittently, or develop in association with progressive conditions, such as arthritis. Despite the advances in knowledge of anatomy and physiology, exotic diagnostic imaging procedures, as well as innovative medical and surgical treatments, the problem of persistent pain is unresolved and remains a major health care problem.
