Abstract
This work is part of an extensive geotechnical investigation of a typical pelagic βredβ clay deposit in the Northwest Pacific Ocean east of Shatsky Rise (Fig. 23.1). Details of this project and its results were presented by Dadey (1983) and Marine Geotechnical Consortium (1985). This chapter focuses on anomalous stress history observed in these sediments and considers the possible influences of microstructure. Standard piston and gravity cores are available from the area, but our work concentrated on hydraulic piston core DSDP 576A because of its length (66 m) and well-constrained coring conditions.
