Abstract

Earthworms are abundant and very important organisms for both soil formation and the breakdown of organic matter in most terrestrial ecosystems. They are, in many ecosystems, key species responsible for moving large amounts of soil from deeper horizons to the surface layers (Edwards and Bohlen 1992). For these and other reasons, earthworms have been used extensively in ecotoxicological soil studies (EEC 1985; Kokta 1992; OECD 1984; van Gestel et al. 1989a,b, 1995).
