Abstract

The existence of tumours or tumour-like lesions showing multinucleate giant cells has been known for over 100 years and the giant cell tumour of bone is a well-recognised entity occurring at the ends of long bones and characteristically presenting in the third and fourth decades. The histological similarity of this lesion to the so-called brown tumour of hyperparathyroidism is also well known. Giant cell tumours have also been reported in the jaw and cranium since the mid-nineteenth century, and in this situation they have generally been regarded as behaving in a more benign manner than those in the long bones.
