Abstract
In Italy, research on immigration has focused chiefly on general issues, while individual communities of immigrants have been relatively neglected. In most cases, the country of origin has been considered as just one facet of the overall phenomenon rather than as an essential element in the explanation of the differences in settlement strategies of different immigrant groups. This generalist approach reflects in some ways the relative invisibility of immigrants in Italy until fairly recently, as well as the imperatives of policy-making regarding immigration, such as quantification and registration.
