Interdisciplinary Research for Sustainable Development

In terms of the developments in the area of sciences, the transformation from disciplinary to interdisciplinary approach has been realized at the end of the 20th century. While the concept of discipline is expressed as specialized knowledge; interdisciplinary is defined as a process for solving a complex or comprehensive problem such as gender equality, climate change, poverty, sustainable cities and communities that cannot be addressed fully in all aspects by a single discipline. The interdisciplinary approach involves integrating knowledge produced by different disciplines on a particular subject, and the result is greater than the sum of all the parts obtained. That is the scientific approach humanity needs to reach the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), since SDGs are related to almost all disciplines. In other words, the concept of sustainable development plays a role in uniting all disciplines that make contribution to reach SDGs. Depend on the perceived need to foster interdisciplinary studies and increases the number of interdisciplinary research examples, the Topical Collection "Interdisciplinary Research for Sustainable Development" is being proposed as part of the journal "Discover Sustainability".
Departing from this point, the topical collection encourages researchers who have interest on SDGs. It welcomes researches that have been conducted with the knowledge of at least two disciplines, e.g. city planning and clean energy, sociology and healthcare, women studies and economics, climatology, geography and tourism, etc. The topical collection of “Discover Sustainability” aims to contribute clarification of the interdisciplinary nature of SDGs and the importance of interdisciplinary researches in order to help to achieve SDGs. The keywords are: Interdisciplinary; Multidisciplinary; Sustainability; Sustainable Development; Complex Problems; Comprehensive Solutions; Social Sciences; Natural Sciences; Humanities
