Hydrogeology of a cold-region watershed near Umiujaq (Nunavik, Canada)

Seven articles address the hydrogeology of the discontinuous permafrost zone of the Canadian subarctic. Like many other Arctic regions, there is rapidly increasing temperature and the climate is becoming wetter. Near-surface permafrost is degrading and the hydrological cycle is changing from a surface-water to a groundwater-dominated system. The articles explore the cryo-hydrogeology, hydrogeochemistry, and water-cycle dynamics of a highly instrumented watershed in Nunavik. A numerical model is then applied to assess the effects of coupled groundwater flow and heat transport on permafrost dynamics. These changes will impact water resources of northern communities as well as terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems.
