ADHD and BPD - associated, but poorly understood

We are delighted to publish a selection of review articles and original data in our special issue in Borderline Personality Disorder and Emotion Dysregulation written by authors dedicated to understanding the link between Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) and the treatment of this particular patient group. Conducting a systematic review, Calvo et al. from Barcelona are able to show the important role of traumatic experiences in the development from childhood ADHD to BPD in later life. Based on available experimental and clinical data in ADHD, Mehren and colleagues derive hypotheses why physical exercise could also be beneficial for patients with BPD. Finally, Rüfenacht et al. from Geneva investigate emotional dysregulation and regulation strategies in ADHD, BPD, and a comorbid sample. Their findings clearly indicate that patients with BPD and comorbid ADHD suffer from the most severe emotion dysregulation, again highlighting the importance of recognizing ADHD in BPD samples.
