Advanced Rare Metals Catalysts for Hydrogen Production

The continuous decrease in fossil resources and the current economic and geopolitical scenarios significantly affect the energy supply and stimulate the production of alternative fuels as well as energy systems, which are more efficient and friendly to the environment. Therefore, a strong demand for renewable energy makes hydrogen a valid alternative energy vector for many hybrid energy systems. As an alternative energy, hydrogen has received attention as it can be applied to various fields such as transport fuel, industrial heat source, and raw material of chemical products. Hydrogen can be produced from various processes, such as coal gasification, methane reforming, water electrolysis, NH3 cracking, etc, via thermal catalysis and electrochemical or photochemical reactions. Strategies for designing highly efficient catalysts are highly necessary considering both fundamental science and practical applications. The aim of this Research Topic is to provide a sampling of on-going, state-of-art research on advanced rare metals catalysts for hydrogen, ranging from fundamental study to practical applications with a concentration on topics which are currently of high interest. Topics covered include, but are not limited to (1) Photocatalytic hydrogen production; (2) Catalysts for water splitting; (3) Hydrogen production process via various feed such as coal, biomass, LOHC (liquid organic hydrogen carriers), ammonia, etc; (4) Electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution; (5) Metal structured catalysts (monolith, foam) for hydrogen production.
