Special Issue: Operations Research and Artificial Intelligence in Banking and Finance

The realm of banking and finance is integral to the functioning of modern economies, having a pivotal role in the allocation of financial capital, and the promotion of economic stability and growth. The increasing complexity of financial markets, driven by the changing contours of the global economy, geopolitical tensions, technological advancements, and socio-environmental constraints, underscores the need for efficient, transparent, and effective management within this realm.

In an era where data-driven strategies and precision are paramount, operations research (OR) and artificial intelligence (AI) offer powerful tools and methodologies that are indispensable in addressing the complex, nonlinear, dynamic and stochastic problems faced in the realm of banking and finance. Through mathematical modeling, optimization, simulation, and data analytics, OR and AI enable more informed and efficient decision-making processes that are not just beneficial, but nowadays essential for modelling and mitigating risks, maintaining a competitive edge and fostering sustainable growth.

The special issue invites submissions of studies that posit new or exploit recent advances in OR and AI to the field of banking and finance. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:

• Large-scale and robust algorithms for financial optimization

• Scenario analysis for risk modeling

• Interpretable machine learning/AI algorithms

• ESG frameworks: issues and associated opportunities for holistic evaluation

• Socially responsible investing

• Banking and finance on climate change

• Productivity and efficiency analysis

• Financial technology

• Regulatory compliance and risk management

The special issue will be associated to the 14th International Conference of the Financial Engineering and Banking Society that will take place from 11 to 13 June 2025 in Montpellier, France. Conference presenters will be invited to submit extended/revised versions of their papers, based on the comments that they will receive during the conference.

However, the special issue is open to all researchers in the area. Attending the conference will not be prerequisite and will not influence the review and selection process.

The standard journal policy will be followed in all the submissions. Papers will be subject to a strict review process under the supervision of the Guest Editors, and in line with the Journal’s guidelines. Authors should submit their manuscripts via the Journal’s online submission platform.
