The advances in novel materials and fabrication methods allow electronic devices with very high performance to be manufactured with conformable or non-conformable substrates. The miniaturization of devices demands the front ends or the main circuitry to be very compact. Such systems if realized using optically transparent materials can help in saving the available board space as it not only maintains the high conductivity but also helps in achieving the same behaviour for electronic gadgets or antenna systems by maintaining the aesthetics due to its optically transparent nature. Transparent antennas that maintain the optical visibility are useful for their integration on various surfaces, such as windows, solar panels, automobiles, and electronic gadgets. The 5G wireless communication systems demand wider bandwidths to accommodate higher capacity. So antenna systems that are transparent and work with the latest 5G applications are in great demand. The RF front ends nowadays are also explored where the chips are fabricated using transparent materials. Along with transparency, the interest has also extended to flexibility by employing elastomeric substrates. The new advancement has opened up a lot of new applications since these devices can easily conform to dynamic and complex surfaces which can be used in consumer electronics, flexible display, lighting, architecture, wearables, and textiles. In the biomedical field, sensors interfaced with transparent flexible wearables help in monitoring habits and health while implantable electronics open a new pathway for enhanced medical diagnostics and imaging. The functionality can be very well extended to unmanned aircraft and robots by interfacing conformable and lightweight sensors with energy harvesting devices. While many innovations and progress are achieved in the early stages, the field of transparent antennas and flexible electronics still has to overcome numerous challenges for its use in daily life. These signifies an enormous opportunity for researchers to considerably and rapidly advance in this field.
We invite researchers to contribute original research articles as well as review articles that seek to address the issues of antenna design and flexible electronics for future emerging applications. Submissions can focus on the research concept or applied research in topics including, but not limited to, the following:
I. Optically Transparent antenna for automation systems
II. Optically Transparent antenna for mobile terminals
III. Optically Transparent Phased Arrays for mm-wave 5G/6G Communication
