Schumpeterian Perspectives on Radical Change: Robotics, Artificial Intelligence and Broad Societal Transformations

When we started this topical collection, little did we know how radical the change would be triggered by OpenAI making its technology available to the public in November 2022.

Little did we know how the public would take up the discussion about ChatGPT in the time since. Little did we know how the new hopes and fears associated with the development of artificial intelligence would shape the academic and public debates, and little did we know how standard the term 'large language models' and other formerly technical terms in computer science would be in the reasoning in economics, management, and other social sciences.

However, the growing impact of digital transformations and artificial intelligence on the world of work, organizations, and social relations was already visible, and it was clear that we should expect their effects on society to expand further. Thus, based on the devastating experience of the pandemic and reflecting on the current state of the world and its economy, we knew that public and academic discourse would have to focus on the broad social transformations that were coming.

This topical collection aims to provide a Schumpeterian perspective on artificial intelligence, robotics, and broad societal transformations. The papers in this topical collection are based on presentations delivered at the 18th conference of the International Joseph A. Schumpeter Society in Rome.

In addition to contributions focussing on artificial intelligence and broader societal transformations, this collection contains studies that bear eloquent witness to the breadth and depth of the discussions within the International Joseph A. Schumpeter Society.
