Responsible production in the context of second-generation biorefineries

Using residues to obtain products with high added value, such as platform molecules, within a circular economy context can be very interesting. The general objective of this special edition is to demonstrate the function of a new concept of biorefinery, which consists of establishing efficient processes of fermentation of residues. The manuscripts should propose a generic idea to allow the efficient (microbial) production of any product derived from organic residues, preferably of high added value. Two main obstacles can be identified in analyzing the persistent difficulties in establishing second-generation biorefineries. Organic waste streams often contain inhibitors and therefore need to be diluted to serve as substrates for microbial growth, and the chemical composition of waste is often poorly defined. They usually consist of a complex matrix and organic substances, of which microorganisms can use only a few. Compounds not consumed by microorganisms often persist in the fermentation medium and are eventually found in the final product. In this special issue, the authors should address problems developing this fermentation process and give alternatives for these not consumed compounds.
