Abstract
In July 2014, the Pacific Forum CSIS and the Asan Institute cohosted a conference in Maui, Hawaii, on trilateral relations of the United States, Japan, and the ROK. The larger focus was on planning for a contingency on the Korean Peninsula that would involve trilateral cooperation. While all sides appeared to agree on the importance of working in unison, especially with regard to deterring and responding to North Korean provocations, doubts prevailed on the prospects for the political flexibility needed to enhance trilateral ties, as a result of the strained relationship between Tokyo and Seoul.
