Abstract
The concept of exuberance is introduced in this chapter as a queer philosophy of excess and abundance. I take a look at dyke + queer BDSM practices and relationships as exuberant intimacies from a perspective that is critical of mono-normativity. The chapter begins by defining intimacy as access that entails boundary transgressions. It goes on to discuss my interview partners’ engagement with BDSM in public as one example of creating intimacy through transgressing the private/public boundary. I then analyze why non-monogamous relationship practices are the (reversed) norm in the dyke + queer BDSM communities. Special attention is given to BDSM-specific kinds of relationship and intimacy, such as the fulltime ownership relationship and sharing intimacy in play party spaces, which leads to synergetic effects.
