Abstract
Banks and other financial intermediaries channel funding from savers to borrowers. The balance sheet management of the intermediaries determines the ease with which credit supply is provided to the wider economy. The recent financial crisis has highlighted the importance of a properly functioning financial sector, and hence the importance of understanding the motivation, mechanics and consequences of financial intermediary balance sheet management.
