Abstract
The research presented in this book has been focused on social vulnerability in European cities, with manifold objectives: disentangling the factors and mechanisms explaining it, analyzing its characteristics and the implications for people who are exposed to it, and identifying the role played by urban policies in preventing and counteracting it.1 Our hypothesis was that the traditional institutions and instruments protecting European citizens from social risks have been weakening as a consequence of the huge economic, demographic, social, and political changes that have been taking place in the last two decades.
