Abstract

Trajectories of research fields are influenced by the accumulation of knowledge, but also by changing methodologies, trends in grant funding, and scholars’ personal interests. As a result, the course of research is neither linear nor predictable, making it particularly important for researchers to periodically reflect, in a systematic manner, upon the progression of works in their areas of expertise. In this chapter, we methodically sample and analyze changing trends in Canadian sociological research regarding education, ethnicity, and inequality from 1980 to 2011. As we examine and discuss patterns in approaches and findings, we also highlight areas and methods where future work is required.
