Abstract

In an era where there has been an unprecedented expansion of evidence-based medicine, clinical guidelines and healthcare standards, patients continue to receive care below levels judged to be appropriate (McGlynn et al. 2003; Hunt et al. 2012; Runciman et al. 2012). Interprofessional collaboration (IPC), a fluid mix of interprofessional learning (IPL) or interprofessional education (IPE) and interprofessional practice (IPP), is advocated as being a driver to promote and improve patient-centred health care. The argument being prosecuted is that IPE is the basis for IPP, which in turn enhances communication, strengthens professional relationships and improves teamwork (Braithwaite et al. 2007c; Greenfield et al. 2011b). These are believed to be critical elements necessary for patient-centred care (International Alliance of Patients’ Organisations 2007).
