Shared Decision-Making and Decision Aid Implementation: Stakeholder Views

  • Chapter
Patient-Centred Health Care

Abstract

Patient-centred care has captured the attention of healthcare providers, payers (public and private) and patients in many North American and European health systems. ‘One of the ethical imperatives of patient-centered care is the balanced, evidence-based presentation of risks and benefits by providers to patients’ (Weinstein et al. 2007). This ethical imperative may be put into practice through the use of shared decisionmaking (SDM). SDM is defined as ‘a collaborative process that allows patients and their providers to make health care decisions together, taking into account the best scientific evidence available, as well as the patient’s values and preferences’ (American Medical Association 2010).
