Abstract
One essential element of patient-centred care is the patients’ involvement in their care including treatment decisions (Mead and Bower, 2000). The negotiation and sharing of treatment decisions also comprise patients’ rejections of healthcare professionals’ recommendations. Recommendations can be interpreted as proposals which require an answer. Acceptance is the preferred reaction, whereas a rejection is less preferred as disagreements are face-threatening (Brown and Levinson, 1987).
