Abstract
How did KWT behave in his role as an educator in the environments—the foundation world and the university— between which he divided his career? In the first part of his career, that is, during what I call “The New York Years,” he worked mainly for various foundations, and thus he had more time and more means to help universities and scholars grow and develop. During the second phase, which I have called “The Charlottesville Years,” he directly functioned as an educator, both as a professor and as an administrator. What did he do then? The two phases dictate the structure and content of the present chapter.
Survival was a race between education and destruction.
— KWT (B1975: 82)
