Abstract
With the advent of the 21st century, there has been a growing realisation, particularly in developing countries, that an ability to use the English language is necessary to participate fully in global economic and social opportunities. As a result, there has been a proliferation of national and international initiatives to channel English language teaching (ELT) endeavours into directions that might lead to more effective outcomes. The past two decades have also ushered in innovative practices that have had an impact on ELT and its interrelated areas like course design, materials development, teaching/learning methodology, and the use of resources provided by ever easier access to technology.
