Abstract
Rueda’s analysis of Qué tan lejos (Tania Hermida, 2006) explores how in this film US and European conventions meet the Latin American literary and cultural tradition. By means of this eclectic mixture, Qué tan lejos stages a contradiction between Ecuador’s natural beauty and its sociopolitical reality. In contrast with US road movies, centered on the sense of individualism and mobility that characterizes postwar USA, Hermida’s road film draws on the Latin American tradition to addresses complex issues such as the tensions between Spain and Latin America, the clash between marginalized indigenous peoples and the Ecuadorian state, and the policies of a controversial agreement between the governments of Colombia and the USA that have also affected Ecuador.
