Abstract
The chapter discusses the recent wave of commemoration of violence in Central and Eastern Europe from the perspective of figurational sociology. The dynamics between the established and the outsiders in the commemorating practices is analyzed, followed by an account of public expressions of memories of violence in the public sphere as instances of the process of civilization.
My research was supported by the Polish National Science Centre (2014/13/B/HS6/03741). I am very grateful to Joanna Wawrzyniak for her kind help with documenting the parts of this chapter discussing social memory research in Central and Eastern Europe.
