Abstract
Phase electric birefringence measurements were performed in water/BHDC (hexadecylbenzyldimethyl ammonium chloride)/benzene microemulsion for molar water-to-surfactant ratio W 0 values between 16 and 20. The extent of negative and positive Kerr parts as W 0 varies is delimited. The two contributions appear simultaneously for W 0 = 18 and 19. The alternative Kerr modulus exhibits a sharp dip at W 0 = 19 as W 0 varies. From a recent model accounting for the negative electric birefringence, we yield a reasonable estimate for the penetration length of voerlapping droplet pairs.
