Abstract
Three large, nationwide sets of data on water chemistry in lakes and rivers, water discharge and groundwater levels were used in a statistical evaluation of the temporal and regional variation of the concentration of coloured substances in Swedish rivers and lakes during the past twenty years. Statistical analysis of collected data revealed remarkable temporal trends. During the study period the concentration of coloured substances increased markedly in both running waters and lakes. Periods of high colour coincided with periods of high precipitation and high runoff. However, even after accounting for changes in runoff by a linear regression model, the concentration of coloured substances in running waters showed an upward trend.
