Abstract

1. There are at least 4 localities in the Southern part of Central Asia in which continuous sedimentation at the Frasnian-Famennian boundary can be verified by means of fossils.

2. The biologic evolution is characterized by successive decreases in diversity during the Frasnian followed by successive increases in diversity during the Famennian. The result was replacement of the Frasnian brachiopod-bryozoan-tentaculitid -trilobite -crinoidal faunal association by the Famennian fauna in which brachiopods and bryozoans were dominant.

3. The Frasnian “extinction” was not a single event. It was an accumulation of many successive episodes of extinctions which changed the character of the fauna.

4. There exists no evidence for a catastrophic change at the Frasnian-Famennian boundary. Instead, the documented changes occurred over a time period of approximately 6 to 8 million years.
