Abstract
This study aims to analyze the impact of the COVID-19 response policies on fertility in East Asia, particularly Japan, China, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong. In addition, this study takes Japan as a case study to examine the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on pregnancy intention. The main results of the study are first, the COVID-19 response policies have suspended marriage events which proportionally affect fertility in most East Asian countries/region. In the case of South Korea and Hong Kong, decrease in international marriage due to border control push further decline in fertility. Second, although the COVID-19 response polices in Japan are self-sufficiency based, the self-guided policies imposed by different businesses have affected people’s life in various ways, including childbearing-related facilities and services. Third, based on the data collected from the survey, pregnancy intention on second childbirth among married couples vary by respondents’ age during the COVID-19 pandemic.
