Abstract

Self-determination is about choice and control, words that are often used in connection to good practice when supporting people with a learning disability, and a central tenet in recent policy papers. Sadly, the lives of people with a learning disability are often controlled by parents and professionals and restricted by the confines of service provision. The stories in this chapter demonstrate how it can be a challenge for people with a learning disability to experience self-determination, yet how also with support, people enjoy this right and have control over their lives and achieve many things.
