Abstract
This chapter focuses on enrolment and attainment of different levels of education across socio-religious groups (SRGs) in Telangana state. The poor enrolment rates and educational attainment of Muslims are noteworthy. Despite their higher concentration in urban areas and a high percentage of literates, most of the Muslims drop out after secondary level of education. The gap between the attendance rate for both boys and girls in primary schools and that in secondary schools is higher in urban areas than in rural areas. Further, in urban areas, it is observed that the attainment of Muslims at different levels of education is lower than even that of SCs. The educational attainments of the Muslim OBCs at higher levels are found to be worse than that of Hindu OBCs, and even SCs. The situation of Muslim women is even worse. In rural Telangana, 49 per cent of households of Muslim OBCs had no female literates. The mean year of schooling of girls among Muslim OBCs is lower than among STs and Hindu OBCs.
