Tehran, Iran: ‘Experimental’ Electronic Scene (2000–2020)

Electronic Cities

Abstract

This chapter argues that Tehran’s electronic scene is not restricted to the aboveground/underground resistance binary that had defined Iran’s alternative rock movement in the early 2000s. Not subjected to the same taboos as rock music, and further bolstered by loosening cultural policies since 2013 and the wise manoeuvrings of the genre’s central figures, Tehran’s electronic scene has managed to move fluidly between the city’s public and private spheres, evoking entirely different creative listening practices compared to rock music.
